The thread connecting it all.
I'm Luc Rulmont, a pre-medical student in Santa Barbara. My path toward medicine has never been a single straight line. It runs through emergency departments and behavioral health, a materials chemistry lab, community advocacy, and the front of a classroom. What connects those experiences is a consistent set of instincts: curiosity about how things work, respect for the people those systems serve, and a commitment to explaining complex things clearly.
Outside of academics, I protect time for the hobbies and relationships that keep me grounded because the person I am outside of medicine will shape the physician I become within it. This portfolio is a living document: I expect to keep refining it through medical school applications and beyond.
What I keep coming back to
My experiences in college have taken me into a lot of different environments. I have spent hundreds of hours in the emergency department and providing one-on-one care, worked with patients through street medicine, spent time in a research lab, taught organic chemistry for four quarters, and helped build a student organization over the course of a year. Some of my other leadership and teaching experiences are newer and are still developing. I did not start all of these activities with one specific plan in mind, but together they have helped me figure out what I keep coming back to: working with people, understanding science, teaching, and finding ways to use what I learn to help others.
